Six Words That Changed My Life

In this episode, I share the six words that transformed my life and the powerful story behind them. Join me as I dive deep into life's tough questions and discover the true impact of pushing through adversity. This isn't just about financial success—it's about inspiring others and leaving a lasting legacy.

The Moment of Realization

Have you ever had someone say something so simple yet so profound that it shakes you to your core and changes the trajectory of your life? For me, it was six words from my cousin Mavis.

It was a tough day. I had just finished a tiring shift at work and was heading to evening classes, feeling defeated. Sitting in my car, too exhausted to move, my phone rang—it was Mavis. As I complained about the struggles of juggling work and school, she listened patiently. Then she dropped those six words: "Boy, it ain't even about you."

What Is This Really About?

Those words forced me to reflect deeply. What was this struggle really about? Was it about the degree? The exhaustion? No, it was about fear. Fear of giving it my all and failing. Fear that my best might not be good enough. Once I acknowledged this, it was eye-opening. I realized that my excuses were just masks for deeper insecurities.

This lesson extends far beyond my academic struggles. In the stock market, personal relationships, or any challenging situation, it's crucial to ask, "What is this really about?" Often, the answers reveal more about our fears and vulnerabilities than the surface problem.

The Negative vs The Positive

With those six words, I was reminded that my actions have ripple effects. If I quit, what message would that send to my community, my future children, or any young person looking up to me? Would they see that it's okay to give up when the going gets tough? Understanding that my actions had the power to inspire others gave me renewed purpose.

The flip side is equally powerful. Who benefits if I keep going? By pushing through, I graduated, joined the alumni board, donated to my alma mater, and even hired graduates from the same institution. My persistence has positively impacted countless individuals who see my journey as a testament to the power of perseverance.

Beyond Ourselves

Ultimately, it's essential to remember that our journeys often carry more weight than we realize. When faced with adversity, ask yourself the hard questions: What is this really about? Who might be impacted if I quit? Who might benefit if I keep going? As Mavis wisely said, "It ain't even about you." So dig deep, push through the struggles, and strive to be a symbol of hope and inspiration for others.
